I could not envision myself practicing midwifery unless it was my passion, which it truly is. Midwife means ‘with women’ and I am an advocate of the very special role that midwives play in the lives of women and their families. I believe that puberty, childbearing, menopause and beyond are inherently normal cycles in a woman’s life and while each may present its unique challenges to the individual, with guidance each woman has the inner strength, power and intuitiveness to encounter each cycle with wisdom, grace and fortitude. As midwives, we are charged with the duty to provide that experienced, knowledgeable guidance for women as they navigate their own special journeys through this incredible maze of womanhood and motherhood.
Through almost a decade of practicing midwifery, I have come to understand that women instinctively and intuitively know how and when to give birth. Despite the evidence-based research that shows homebirth to be as safe (and often safer) than hospital birth, currently in the United States, less than one percent of women are choosing to give birth at home. However, for that one percent of families who are choosing homebirth, the choice should be made with the confidence that there are midwives willing to attend them who are skilled, experienced and passionate about birth. Midwives, who are willing to attend them with compassion and who come to the birth with expertise in handling situations that may arise at the birth that would require an intervention that a skilled midwife can handle safely, calmly and expediently.
