One of the many benefits of having a homebirth is the one-to-one care that you and your newborn will receive during the purpureum (time directly after birth until six weeks postpartum). You will be seen by the midwife and/or her assistant at 24 hours, 3 days, 2 weeks, and six weeks after birth. All the postpartum visits will take place in your home except the six week postpartum visit that we ask you schedule at our office in Carrboro since this is often a full exam with pap smear if indicated. These visits are vital to assess the well-being of both you and baby as well as offer support as you both learn the art of breastfeeding! Also, this is a wonderful opportunity for the midwife to assess for postpartum depression and to provide gentle guidance as you and your newborn navigate through these first few precious weeks.
